ALMOST £1m will be spent strengthening a busy bridge.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet decided on Wednesday to spend £905,000 on the Union Bridge in Marsden.

A single lane will remain open during most of the work, which is due to start in May. But the bridge will be closed to traffic for two weekends.

The bridge carries Church Lane over the River Colne and provides access to the centre of Marsden and Standedge Visitor Centre.
