A HOSPITAL revamp is set to modernise health care in the Holme Valley.

The £1m refurbishment at Holme Valley Memorial Hospital is already underway and is due to be finished in October.

Dental services and the day surgery unit are to benefit from the work.

Primary Care Trust, NHS Kirklees, which provides and manages primary health services in the area, is working in conjunction with Locala Community Partnership, which provides community health care services like health visiting and district nursing.

The work follows on from the refurbishment of inpatient accommodation on the hospital’s Maple Ward in 2009.

Keith Geldard, head of estates for NHS Kirklees, said: “On completion, the project will further enhance the provision of modern health care services in the Holmfirth and Home Valley locality, while retaining the traditional charm of the Memorial Hospital.”

Peter Horner, Locala’s services manager for the Holme Valley Memorial Hospital said: “We are really looking forward to the completion of the work. It will be a welcome improvement for our patients and colleagues working there.

“We have further plans for the building and this refurbishment is an important step in this direction.”

The scheme includes:

Provision of a new dental suite with an additional surgery.

Provision of a colposcopy (cervix examination) suite.

Three additional consultation or treatment rooms.

Discrete patient and staff changing facilities.

Modern IT connectivity to support provision of health care.

Refurbishment of the remaining treatment and consulting rooms in the day surgery unit.

A combined reception facility.

Demolition of the current dental block and provision of additional car parking.

The scheme also aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the site by replacing the central boiler plant and associated services with modern gas fired condensing boilers, using double glazing, increased insulation and low-energy lighting.

The hospital was built by public subscription as a memorial to soldiers in the First World War.
