TWO areas of Calderdale could have 20mph speed limits enforced on them.

Councillors will next week discuss plans to introduce 20mph areas in a bid to reduce the number of road casualties.

The sites for the trial scheme, expected to cost £100,000, have not yet been discussed.

In a report, due to be presented to Cabinet members next Monday, councillors will be told that the number of people killed and seriously injured on Calderdale’s roads is not falling as quickly as it needs to in order to meet government and council targets.

Although figures have not yet been released, the council needs to look at alternative ways to reduce the number of casualties and a 20mph speed restriction is considered a sensible option.

It is something which Kirklees Council has already imposed in Meltham and in Honley.

Calderdale councillors will consider the effectiveness of implementing 20mph areas – at first on a trial basis.

After the trial, councillors will consider its success before deciding if it should be fully implemented.

The report says: “The number of people killed and seriously injured on Calderdale’s roads is relatively small – reflecting the good work that has been done over a period of many years.

“However, despite a continuing reduction in the overall numbers of people injured on Calderdale’s roads, total statistics are not falling as quickly as they need to do in order to meet Government targets through the Local Transport Plan or the Local Area Agreement target.”

The two areas chosen are expected to be those with the highest casualty rates and with a large residential population.

It is likely to take up to one year to identify and implement the first two trial sites.

The issue will be discussed at the Cabinet at Halifax Town Hall on Monday at 4pm.
