THE number of motorists who have escaped driving bans has been revealed.

Figures published by the DVLA show 22 drivers in Huddersfield have kept hold of their licences despite accumulating 12 or more points.

Motorists are normally penalised three points at a time, for offences such as speeding, driving on their mobile or using an unroadworthy vehicle.

Magistrates typically ban drivers for six months if they tot up 12 points.

But motorists can escape a ban if they can prove to the court it will cause them unnecessary financial hardship or have other special circumstances.

Earlier this month we revealed more than 40% or drivers were now getting away without a ban despite having 12 points.

Data released by Huddersfield road safety charity Brake showed a total of 10,072 drivers with 12 points continued to enjoy the open road and that motorists with as many as 32 points on their licence have not been disqualified from driving.

In Kirklees a total of 48 drivers are driving with more than 12 points: In addition to Huddersfield, Cleckheaton has 4, Dewsbury 9, Heckmondwike 4, Holmfirth 3, Liversedge 3, Mirfield 3.

In comparison Halifax has 17, Bradford 70, Wakefield 21 and Leeds 129.

Meanwhile hundreds of convicted drink-drivers also avoid bans. Of 55,539 people convicted of drink-driving last year, 1,480 were not disqualified.
