Dewsbury hospital is set to undergo a £22m revamp.

The crumbling estate in the Staincliffe area of the town is set to be completely transformed over the coming years.

Bosses from Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust are hoping to sell some of the land for housing.

Two of the five main buildings – Bronte Tower and the Staincliffe Wing – were put up for sale last year.

Now a major construction firm has won the rights to the multimillion overhaul of the Ridings building as hospital chiefs move to consolidate services there.

The three year project will involve refurbishment work and a new main entrance will be built to provide a central focal point for patients, visitors and staff.

Building firm Kier will begin work later this year by relocating services into the Ridings building and Service Centre.

The construction of the new entrance will be part of the second phase, to be completed by summer 2018.

The project comes amid a shake-up of services across the Mid Yorkshire trust and Kirklees area.

Dewsbury’s A&E department is to be “downgraded” with no senior doctors on site at night while its maternity unit is also set to lose consultant cover.

Higher risk or more critical patients will be directed to Pinderfields.
