A COUNCILLOR is to retire after more than 25 years on Kirklees.

Clr Gordon Beever, 61, of Slaithwaite, has represented Colne Valley since 1982.

The Lib-Dem said: “It has been an honour to represent such a diverse ward for more than a quarter of a century.

“My wife and I have made many good friends here and I hope we helped change the area for the better.

“When I was first elected Colne Valley was suffering serious decline because of the running down of the local textile industry.

“Now there is a vibrancy about the area, people recognise it as a superb place to live and raise their families.

“I am very optimistic for the Colne Valley.”

During his time on the council Clr Beever has served as Cabinet member for finance and legal services, director of Kirklees Development Company and a member of the West Yorkshire Fire Authority.

He has also served on the Local Government Association since its formation in 1997.
