THREE men killed in a horror crash early today are thought to come from Huddersfield.

The smash near Oldham left two other men critically ill and they are also believed to be from the Huddersfield area.

One of those killed is believed to be from Marsden.

All five were in a Peugeot 106 car which hit a bus head-on at a notorious accident blackspot.

The driver of the single-decker bus was unharmed.

The smash happened on the A62 Huddersfield Road close to Oldham at 1am.

The road, near the Star Inn, was shut until 6.30am while police accident investigation experts worked at the scene.

The tragedy was at a place called Scouthead on the Oldham side of Delph.

The small hatchback car travelling towards Huddersfield was in a head-on smash with a single-decker bus on a bend at 1am.

It was sleeting at the time and driving conditions are thought to have been poor.

Emergency crews were faced with a scene of utter devastation. Three men were declared dead at the scene.

The other two had to be cut free and were taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital where they were said to be in a critical condition.

Oldham Fire Station Station Officer Rick Cummins said: "This is one of the worst accidents we have ever seen. It was a scene of complete devastation.

"When we arrived all five were trapped and none of them were conscious.

"It is a particularly bad bend where the crash happened."

There have been 20 fatal or serious collisions on that stretch of road in just two years.

A spokesman for Oldham Council said the road had been gritted at 6pm yesterday and was due to be gritted again at 4.30am today.
