STAFF and volunteers at charity shops raised an extra £30,000 for Sue Ryder Care by organising fun events in its 50th anniversary year.

Parachute jumps, coffee mornings, tombolas and other additional fundraising activities were arranged to make the birthday extra special.

The charity has 18 care centres throughout the UK and looks after people with conditions including cancer, multiple sclerosis and brain injuries.

The charity has to raise £13m every year to assist its work.

Charity retail director Alan Hodges said: "With 430 shops on high streets throughout the UK, Sue Ryder Care is synonymous with charity retailing."

The charity has local shops at Westbourne Road, Marsh, and in Mirfield and Batley.

Last year, Sue Ryder Care made more than 20,000 home visits, welcomed 13,000 patients to its day care centres and cared for 3,300 people in the care centres.
