A huge fraud investigation into so called ‘cash for crash’ scam operated in Huddersfield has resulted in 35 people due to be sentenced tomorrow at crown court.

Operation Thatcham was launched by Kirklees Police in 2011 following claims car crashes were staged to make hundreds of thousands of pounds of fraudulent insurance claims.

In December 2011 police arrested 35 people as part of the initial arrest phase of the inquiries which focused on a business on Blackmoorfoot Road, Crosland Moor.

A further 30 arrests have also been made as the scams unravelled further potential suspects linked to the fraud.

The investigation was led by Kirklees CID, Proceeds of Crime Officers, the Ministry of Justice and the Insurance Fraud Bureau, into a suspected crash for cash scam in Huddersfield.

At the time of the uncovering, six cars with an estimated value £150,000, cash totalling £20,000 and jewellery with an estimated value of £15,000 were seized during the raids.

Cash, computers and mobile phones were also seized as part of the investigation.

The case will be heard at Leeds Crown Court before Judge James Spencer from 10am.
