Almost £4,000 has been raised in memory of Meltham soldier hero Tom Wroe.

The Holmfirth and Meltham Lions organised a memorial charity dinner in aid of the Tom Wroe Memorial Fund.

The fund was formed after the tragic death of Pte Wroe, 18, who was killed serving his country in Afghanistan.

His parents Claire and Mick and sister Demi set up the fund as a lasting legacy.

And on Saturday hundreds gathered at Durker Roods Hotel in Meltham and dug deep for the worthy cause.

Lions president Richard Walker revealed that £3,900 had been raised and said: “It’s a smashing amount, we’re really pleased.

“The Tom Wroe Memorial Fund was formed in Tom’s memory to make donations to local causes to benefit the whole community.

“We’re pleased to have been able to help.”

The proceeds from the dinner will go to projects at Meltham Moor Primary School, where Tom and sister Demi were both pupils.

Pte Wroe was killed along with his colleague Sgt Gareth Thursby when they went to help a man dressed as an Afghan policeman.

Both members of the 3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment (Duke of Wellington’s), they were killed instantly.

Since the tragedy in 2012 his family has worked tirelessly to support the community in his memory.

The event was opened by Colne Valley Tory MP Jason McCartney and Mayor of Meltham Terry Lyons.

A three-course dinner was followed by games, a cabaret by James Anderson and an auction of more than 40 items.
