AN industrial development has got the green light for expansion.

And it could provide at least 40 new jobs for local residents.

Calderdale councillors on the planning committee approved a new 4,144sqm industrial unit for the side of the Calder and Hebble Navigation at Brookfoot.

But it comes despite neighbours objecting to the development at Elland Road, Brighouse.

Clr Daniel Sutherland, chairman of the planning committee, welcomed the proposal, saying: “There is very little ideal employment land left in Calderdale and we need to make the best use out of what we have.”

Bill Ibberson, of Younger Homes, is the agent for Brighouse Patent Walling Systems, who want to develop the site.

They will build a new industrial unit and redevelop an existing unit on the site.

Much of the site is currently undeveloped with access off Elland Road, north of Bapp Industrial Supplies.

But not everyone is happy about the plans. There are 10 letters opposing them.

One man criticised the council for not informing more local residents and said the development falls 25 yards from the nearest properties.

He also said there were vacant industrial properties nearby and opposed the reclassification of the site in planning terms.

But Mr Ibberson said: “There are no available sites across the road, as it’s been said.

“This will create 40 jobs on the site which we want to come from local estates.

“But there will be jobs in the wider community as a result of this development, which will mean there will be more than 40.”

Council officers said the economic benefits far outweighed the removal of some trees on the site.

Councillors unanimously approved the plans
