A Golcar store is undergoing a £460,000 revamp ... before a Tesco store could be built nearby.
The Co-operative Food store in Golcar is being transformed and is now shut while the work is underway.
The Town End store is being redefined, with a completely new look and will be opened by representatives from Golcar Winkle Club and pupils from Manor Road Junior Infant and Nursery School and St John’s CE Junior and Infant School at 10am on Thursday, October 2.
The in-store bakery is being increased and the store is extending its ranges.
Store manager Joanne Pollard said: “The Co-operative is a community retailer, and we are committed to playing an active role in local life, embracing the area’s community spirit. The store will be a hub for the local community and customers will be able to find out what is going on locally, and learn more about how The Co-operative’s Community Fund can benefit local groups.”
The store has a “community pioneer”, Karen Weston, appointed as part of a new programme that sees a member of the store team with an additional remit to foster a strong involvement in community activity, from volunteering opportunities to helping develop solutions to meet local needs.
Last month the Examiner revealed that the Rising Sun in Leymoor Road may well become a Tesco Express after its owners, Enterprise Inns, agreed a deal to sell it due to a fall in trade.
No dates have yet been agreed for the change but Tesco has already announced plans to submit a planning application to create an extension. It would mean there would be a Tesco around 100 yards from the Co-operative food store at Town End in Golcar.
It is the latest pub to be turned into a chain food shop in the area and will not require planning permission for its change of use due to a planning law introduced in England and Wales in 1995.
