A £50,000 boost has been made to the creation of Dewsbury Country Park.

The money from Kirklees Council will be used to create a car park and improve access to the park, which is also known as Lower Spen Valley Country Park.

A former landfill site, it is being transformed into the largest new woodland in the north of England, with 74,000 trees over 72 hectares.

The £50,000 from the council is in addition to a £494,000 grant from the Forestry Commission to start the transformation of the landfill site, off Park Road in Ravensthorpe.

Kirklees leader, Clr David Sheard, said: “I think it’s the biggest park in Kirklees and there is a lot of potential there.”

The £494,000 is paying for the ground works and planting of the woodland, creating the footpaths, wetland, seating and signs.

Kirklees has already put £30,000 towards creating footpaths around the site.

A ‘Friends of’ group is likely to be formed to carry out some physical work and run events at the country park.

Already community groups and businesses have volunteered to carry out the tree planting, which has seen silver birch, rowan, sessile oak, hawthorn and Scots pine trees planted.

Over 1,000m of footpaths have been constructed, which includes wheelchair accessible routes. This has been done by contractors.

Wetlands have been created close to the Spen Valley Greenway.

Overall works so far have cost £265,000, with the remainder beings spent in the years to 2019.
