Parks and open spaces are getting a funding boost.

A total of £534,625 is being spent on facilities throughout Kirklees.

The funding has come from money that developers are required to pay if they secure planning permission.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet backed plans to spend parks and open spaces funding on 18 projects borough-wide. They are:

£78,260 for Lindley recreation ground and Fern Lea Road recreation ground.

£40,273 for Roman Close, Mount and the Hubert Street, Salendine Nook, play area improvements,

£32,000 for the Thornton Lodge Road, Yews Hill, Back Victoria Road, Bland Street and Rashcliffe Hill Road play areas.

£123,500 for the New Mill recreation ground and Kirkroyd recreation ground.

£19,573 for Birkenshaw Park, Birkenshaw.

£8,500 for Lees Holme Park, Thornhill Lees.

£77,222 for Gilthwaites and Sunnybank recreation grounds in Denby Dale.

£7,800 for the Miry Lane play area, Thongsbridge.

£15,000 for the Healey recreation ground, Batley.

£132,497 for the Sunnymead recreation ground in Scissett.

Clr Cathy Scott, Cabinet member for Place, said: “In essence, despite the severe cuts we are facing, the fact that half a million pounds of funding from new housing developments that have already been completed is good news.

“It’s good news for all these local communities to see this funding is spent on improving their areas.”

As part of planning approval, developers can be asked to make contributions to public open spaces, education and highways. Some of the funding relates to developments that have long been built, two dating back to planning consent given in 2005.
