A new sports facility has opened at a Huddersfield college.

Huddersfield New College held a four-day festival to mark the official opening of its impressive £600,000 Sports Barn.

The college at Salendine Nook has played host to a range of sporting events, with pupils travelling from across the county to take part, along with a number of sporting stars and rising talents, who were on hand to give friendly advice to up and coming sporting stars.

The events included a touch rugby match between Royds Hall and Salendine Nook High Schools. Giving the young players some friendly advice were Giants stars Danny Brough, Eorl Crabtree, Michael Lawrence and Leroy Cudjoe.

There was a football match played between New College’s HNC academy team and Bradford City’s under 15/16 team when the special guest was Tony Whelan, assistant academy manager for Manchester United, who gave a presentation after the match.

Other events include a six-a-side cricket festival involving six local primary schools.

Mark Loker, Yorkshire women’s cricket coach and Sally Briggs, Yorkshire women’s cricket captain, were also on campus handing out hints and tips to sports students.

The celebrations culminated with a star-studded ceremony, attended by local VIPs including Eorl Crabtree and the Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Martyn Bolt, on Friday.

Throughout the week student brand ambassadors and the college’s head of sport, Gabriel Mellor, were available to talk about the college’s ten-year sporting history from humble origins to the award-winning curriculum now on offer.
