GARDENERS have grown flowers and vegetables for an annual show, for the last time.

The 62nd Syngenta Horticultural Show was held at Leeds Road, Huddersfield. But the retirement of show president Geoff Taylor in December means it will be the last.

Mr Taylor, principal process chemist at Syngenta, said it was a sad day.

"The first show was held in 1941 as part of the war effort to encourage people to grow their own produce," said Mr Taylor. "But growing vegetables and flowers to show standard is not an easy task and people just don't want to make the effort these days."

A former long-standing president Will Wood and his wife Alison travelled from their home in Scotland for the show.

Door proceeds and a raffle of produce raised about £200 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance charity.

Sixty-two exhibitors submitted 473 entries in the open classes and seven submitted 71 entries in the members' classes.
