GET ready to make a splash in a new swimming pool!

A £6m facility at Wellholme Park, off Bradford Road, Brighouse, will be ready in time for the October half-term holidays, councillors say.

Calderdale Council has funded the baths from an £11m budget, which has been spent on new leisure facilities in the borough including a new pool in Sowerby Bridge, which is due to open in November.

Clr Pauline Nash, the council’s Cabinet member for safer and stronger communities, said: "We are delighted that the countdown has started to new first-class leisure facilities in the borough.

"Along with local people we are awaiting the opening of the new pools and fitness suites with excitement."

The old pool in Brighouse closed in 2006, leaving the town without swimming facilities.

But the new pool will be open for use in eight weeks’ time.

Councillors on the safer and stronger communities scrutiny panel were told that the £6m Brighouse pool and leisure centre is due to be handed over to the council on Monday, October 11.

Final inspections will be carried out and it will open to the public on Monday, October 25.

Despite the bad weather hampering work early in the year, contractors made up the time, meaning it will open as planned in time for the half-term holidays.

The new facilities include a 25 metre swimming pool, learner pool, gym and dance studio.

And as part of the celebrations, local schools have been involved in a time capsule burial.

A charity swim will be held prior to the opening of the pool.

The event will assist staff with operating procedures and prepare the site and staff for the general public, as well as benefit school funds and the mayor’s charity.
