MORE than 700 people have protested at plans to build homes and a sports hall in a school's grounds.

Now, the latest bid for the development at Castle Hall School, Mirfield, looks likely to be rejected.

The blow is set to be dealt at a meeting next week.

A planners' report to Kirklees councillors said there were severe road safety implications.

School governors have promised £250,000 road improvements if their scheme goes ahead.

But highways officials are against the project - despite the spending pledge.

Their worries centre on the junction of Camm Lane and Towngate.

The planners' report says: "There is no guarantee that the proposed measures will help promote road safety and every indication that the existing situation could be made more hazardous."

Objections to the scheme have been made by 736 people, the report adds.

The school wants to build a new sports hall and an all- weather pitch with money raised by selling part of the playing fields for 30 homes. Councillors have rejected three previous development plans.

Governors say the land sale is the only way of paying for the sports hall after lottery funding was rejected.

A decision on planning permission is set to be taken by Kirklees councillors next Thursday.
