CHILDREN in Kirklees's French twin town of Besancon were treated to English food.

Every primary school pupil in the town was served a traditional lunch of roast lamb and mint sauce. They were also handed a Union Jack each to mark the 50th anniversary of the twinning link.

Some of the youngsters are pictured having their lunch. Officials at Ville de Besancon, the town's council, arranged the treat.

Caroline Melotte, international liaison officer at Kirklees Council, said: "I'm told they loved their roast dinner, and thousands of flags were given out."

A programme of events is planned for Kirklees later this year to mark half a century of friendship between the two areas. Attractions will include a French market.

Today is Bastille Day in France.
