Firefighters called to tackle a blaze at a Crosland Moor house contacted police after discovering a cannabis farm in the cellar.

Aaron Corion admitted producing the class B drug at the address in Crosland Street.

Andy Wills, prosecuting, told Kirklees magistrates that police attended at the property on February 15.

He said: “The fire service had been called to put out a fire in the cellar there.

“They had found a small cannabis farm and an extension lead attached to the farm had caught fire.”

The court heard that police found two large cannabis plants, 12 medium plants and 16 seedlings in the property.

They also discovered a full hydroponic set up including foil lining, lights, an extractor fan and transformers.

While police were at the house the owner returned and said that her boyfriend had been living there by himself.

Magistrates sitting in Huddersfield heard that she was not aware of cannabis being grown there.

Corion, 30, said that he grew the drug for his own personal use.

Kirklees magistrates sent his case to Leeds Crown Court, where he will appear on March 27.

A Newton hearing, a form of mini trial, needs to be held before his sentencing because of the difference in facts put forward by the defence and prosecution.

In the meantime Corion, of Strathyre Avenue in London, is subject to bail conditions.

These are residence at the address and a curfew between 8pm and 6am.
