HUDDERSFIELD University has moved a step closer to sponsoring a school.
Calderdale Council wants to set up an academy at Holy Trinity C of E Senior School in Halifax.
Huddersfield University, Calderdale College and the Church of England’s Wakefield Diocese all hope to co-sponsor the new school.
And on Wednesday Calderdale Council decided to endorse these expressions of interest.
The council’s Cabinet member for schools, Clr Craig Whittaker, welcomed the move.
He said: “I am delighted that the council has given its backing to the proposed academy.
“This is a significant step on the road towards changing the way in which secondary education is delivered to children and young people across the communities of North Halifax.
“We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring about a step change in the provision of education in the area.”
The proposed academy would replace the 1,000-pupil school at Holdsworth with a larger secondary school offering 1,450 places to young people aged 11 to 19.
It would work with Huddersfield University and Calderdale College to support life-long learning for pupils.
