A SERIOUS collision on the M62 caused traffic chaos for hundreds of drivers on Saturday afternoon.

A blue Volkswagon Golf travelling eastbound near Scammonden left the carriageway and careered on to the embankment before flipping over on to its side.

A 20-year-old male passenger was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary, believed to be in a serious condition but with no life-threatening injuries.

The driver and another passenger were taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with slight injuries.

It is thought the passengers were from Bolton and were travelling to a wedding in the Huddersfield area.

The lunchtime incident caused major hold-ups on both east and westbound lanes, causing traffic chaos for hundreds of drivers travelling on the motorway.

Police and ambulance crews were also called to an incident just after Junction 23 near Outlane at around 1.20pm after a Suzuki SV 1000cc motorbike travelling westbound collided with a car.

The motorcyclist was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
