A ROW has broken out over repeated fly-tipping on a site in Birkby.

Angry councillors have complained repeatedly about the rubbish dumped on a small strip of land off Halifax Old Road.

They want Kirklees Council to consider selling off the land to a local resident, who wants to extend her garden, as they believe it could solve the tipping problem.

But the council has so far refused to consider the request.

Clr Deryck Hillas and Clr Mehboob Khan, who represent the Birkby ward, have now called for an urgent meeting with council officers to examine the problems.

And they expressed surprise that the council itself did not seem to know it owned the land.

Clr Hillas said: "The rubbish that has been dumped there is appalling.

"People have obviously seen some people dump rubbish there and are following suit.

"There were several drums of oil leaking on the site as well as a burned out mattress. Local residents reported the rubbish some time ago but no action was taken.

"A resident has expressed an interest in taking over the site and I believe we should now look again at the decision.

"Can the council consider selling the land or at least leasing it to people on low-rental garden leases?"

A council spokesman said the dumped rubbish would be cleared as soon as possible.

The issue of the site's future would have to be discussed.
