A PETITION to update a children's play area in Linthwaite has sparked action from Kirklees Council.

But youngsters will have to wait up to three years before their wishes are granted.

Mums Deborah Garside and Rebecca Greenhough, of Causeway Crescent, collected 76 names as part of their campaign to improve the area, which is on their road.

A report to Kirklees's Colne Valley area committee says its outdated equipment and tarmac and concrete surface fully justifies selection on the council's "priorities schedule."

But the report says the site is No 23 on the list, with work likely to be completed within the 2005/6 financial year.

John Fletcher, of culture and leisure services, said the council had a programme of refurbishing play sites.

The programme, with an estimated value of more than £400,000 a year, annually refurbishes between eight and 12 sites on a priorities schedule.

Work includes providing new equipment on a safety surface, dog-proof fencing, seating and litter bins.

Kirklees officials are to speak to the petition organisers to advise them of the position and consult them when designs plans are drawn up.
