He’s scored goals for fun in his successful football career.

But now Huddersfield amateur player Ashley Flynn has another claim to fame.

Footage of his penalty miss for AFC Emley has gone viral around the world - as one of the WORST penalties of all time.

He tried what is known as a Panenka penalty in Emley’s match against Hemsworth but succeeded only in chipping the ball to the bemused goalkeeper.

The miss was captured on a mobile phone by a fan behind the goal and the resultant footage has now been seen by more than ONE MILLION people through Facebook, twitter or websites.

The spot-kick was named after Czech star Antonin Panenka, who delicately chipped the ball in the 1976 European Championships against Germany.

The shot has been deployed by a host of celebrated talents including Francesco Totti, Zinedine Zidane and Andrea Pirlo, who memorably beat Joe Hart at Euro 2012 with his own version.

But obviously the kick relies on the goalkeeper committing himself and diving.

Flynn, 25, of Dalton, can see the funny side of it now and is amazed at the interest that it has drawn from all over the world.“It went on twitter and on Facebook and I believe now it has had well over a million hits.

“It’s perhaps not what I want to be known for.

“I have tried that style of penalty before and it has worked. I scored for Emley earlier this season with one but on Saturday, it went wrong”.

Flynn was quick to apologise to fans of the Huddersfield club and to manager Darren Hepworth, as his team went down 3-0 in the game.

He tweeted: “Would like to apologise to everyone at AFC Emley today for my performance and for the penalty.

“Something I’ve always done and backfired.”

Flynn was on the books of Sheffield Wednesday as a teenager but an eye problem meant he had to leave at 15. He was then persuaded by Huddersfield amateur footballer Charlie Bradshaw to tun out for Syngenta in the Works League and did that for a season before being snapped up by non-league Frickely.

He is now enjoying his time back with Emley at the Welfare Ground and has bagged 16 goals so far.

The club lie third in the table.

Flynn said: “We have had a good season and I’m enjoying my football.

“The boss wasn’t too pleased about the miss on Saturday as it may have got us back into the game but it’s in the past.

“I’ll certainly be up for a penalty when we play Shirebook on Saturday”.
