HUDDERSFIELD’S most famous son got a winter warmer.

Age UK officials kitted out Harold Wilson with a bobble hat – to draw attention to the nation’s elderly feeling the cold.

Judith Churley, of Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees, placed the hat on Lord Wilson’s statue in St George’s Square, Huddersfield.

She said: “Winter can be especially bleak for older people, with the cold weather confining them to their homes or worse.

“Last year in the UK, 24,000 older people died unnecessarily due to the cold.

“The winter months have a devastating impact on many older people and that’s why Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees is inviting people to join thousands of others across the UK raising money for Age UK’s Bobble Day today.

“Any money that you raise will help Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees warm up our older people.”

The charity can provide tips on how to stay warm at home and give out grants to help people meet heating costs.
