THE agonising wait goes on for the family of a Huddersfield man who has disappeared.

Relatives of builder John Hay were still awaiting news of his whereabouts – three days after a man was held on suspicion of his murder.

No trace has been found of the 61-year-old Fenay Bridge man, despite extensive police inquiries in both Huddersfield and in Humberside.

The 63-year-old man who was detained on Tuesday in Netherthong was still in custody last night.

Detectives have been questioning him about the disappearance of Mr Hay, who vanished on March 15.

Mr Hay’s white van was found abandoned in Hessle, very close to the landmark Humber Bridge, and police have carried out extensive inquiries in that area to try and find him.

Detectives last night repeated appeals for anyone with information about Mr Hay to come forward.

They spent many hours earlier this week searching a house and smallholding off Upper Hagg Road at Netherthong.

Officers have also carried out searches at a stonemason’s yard close to the Netherthong property and at stables between Honley and Meltham,

Mr Hay had served for almost 20 years in the police before becoming a builder.

He spent many years in the traffic section of the former West Yorkshire Constabulary.

He is white, about 6ft 4in tall and has thick white hair. He was last seen wearing navy or black trousers, a white T-shirt and a gilet.

His white panel van with the registration number A12 HAY has been examined by forensic experts looking for clues as to Mr Hay’s disappearance.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said last night: “The 63-year-old man remains in police custody in connection with this inquiry. We would repeat the appeal for anyone with information about Mr Hay to come forward.”.
