Work at Huddersfield’s busiest junction is expected to be completed next week – weather permitting.

A £2m project to improve traffic flows at Ainley Top Roundabout should be finished by June 6, Kirklees Council has said.

Work began in January to reduce congestion and improve safety at the junction which serves Huddersfield, Halifax and the M62.

The roundabout had become a notorious bottleneck causing tailbacks down Halifax Road and Calderdale Way during rush hours and has become an accident blackspot with vehicles often going into the back of one another.

A spokesperson for Kirklees Council said: “The work will lead to shorter queues and less delays for motorists, although there will still be some congestion because of the huge number of motorists who use this junction.

“Improvements for drivers will include traffic lights which will control traffic movements so drivers will no longer need to find gaps in fast-moving traffic.

“Pedestrians will also be able to use new ‘red and green figure’ crossing facilities.

“The roundabout speed limit will also be reduced to 40mph which will improve safety for all road users and reduce the number of accidents.”

The roundabout was closed at night between May 6 and 23 so it could be resurfaced.

As well as traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, the new roundabout will have three lanes, compared to two previously.
