A SUPERMARKET giant wants to build a new store on the former site of Huddersfield Rugby Union Club.

Aldi wants to set up shop at Wakefield Road in Waterloo.

Plans have been submitted to Kirklees Council which will decide on the proposal after public consultation ends on August 6.

Aldi wants to build a food retail unit and two non-food retail units with parking and access roads.

The site has been derelict since the rugby club left for Lockwood Park in July 1996.

German-based Aldi opened its first British stores in 1990 and now has 300 shops across this country.

If the store gets the go-ahead it will be directly opposite Morrisons at Waterloo.

It would also be the third new supermarket development along the Wakefield Road in recent times.

Netto opened a store in Aspley last year while Lidl are currently building a shop at the site of the former Glynn Webb store in Wakefield Road, Aspley.
