A good Samaritan made a citizen’s arrest after spotting a man tampering with his neighbour’s car.

Now Qamar Sarif has been jailed for 15 months after he was caught committing an offence while under a suspended sentence.

Leeds Crown Court heard Sharif was spotted near a BMW car in Gledholt Road, Marsh around 11.40pm on February 14 this year after a security light sensor was activated.

A resident saw on his CCTV a male with his hood up near the passenger door of his neighbour’s car and initially thought it was his neighbour but decided to check.

When he went out to the car he saw the male was now in the front passenger seat.

Kathryn Stuckey prosecuting told the court he approached and confronted Sharif asking what he was doing. Sharif at first said “Oh, I’m in the wrong car,” then claimed to be looking for his dog.

He got out of the car and then said he had a knife in his pocket but the man did not believe him and took hold of him by his jacket while shouting for his neighbour. He then escorted Sharif into his own home and told his partner to call the police.

The court was told in June 2014 Sharif was given a 21-month suspended sentence for possessing crack cocaine with intent to supply and having an imitation firearm.

In December last year he was given a community order with a drug rehabilitation requirement and the suspended sentence was allowed to continue.

Joanne Shepherd representing Sharif said at that time he was battling a long term drug addiction and had done well until events “threw him off kilter”.

Sharif personally told the judge: “I am so sorry for what I have done. It wasn’t pre-meditated, it was just a spur of the moment stupid thing I did.”

Sharif, 40 of Half Moon Street, Huddersfield admitted interfering with a motor vehicle.

Jailing him Judge Geoffrey Marson QC said he had been warned what would happen if he offended during the suspended sentence and that had been re-iterated when he was given another chance with a community order.

He accepted Sharif had made some progress and would not impose the full suspended sentence but there had to be a jail term of 15 months. He imposed a one month jail sentence to run concurrent for the car offence.
