CONSUMER Direct Yorkshire is warning consumers to be wary of bogus home working schemes promising big money.

Last year, the watchdog received over 100 complaints from customers who had been cheated by schemes promising up to £24,000 a month.

Such get-rich-quick schemes, advertised in shop windows and national and local newspapers, often ask for advance fees for a starter pack. The company then fails to deliver the means to start earning and refuses to refund the customer.

Consumer Direct says genuine home working plans will not ask for advance fees.

The watchdog advises customers to also watch out for premium rate numbers, anonymous e-mail or PO box addresses and companies who refuse to disclose details about themselves.
