A drunken man swore at ambulance staff when they tried to help him after he suffered a head injury.

Allen Lodge became aggressive and walked away - forcing the concerned crew to follow him.

Kirklees magistrates yesterday issued him with a fine after criticising him for diverting ambulance resources away from others in need of their help.

The 26-year-old pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in public.

The court heard that at around midnight on December 27 police were called to the Jet petrol station on Woodhead Road in Lockwood.

Andy Wills, prosecuting, said: “An ambulance crew was there trying to treat a male with a head injury and he became aggressive towards them.

“Police arrived and the male walked off towards Lockwood Road, with the concerned crew following behind him.”

Lodge was found walking in the middle of the road near Chapel Hill.

As ambulance staff still attempted to give him treatment he continued to behave aggressively and swore at them.

Police asked Lodge, of Armitage Road in Milnsbridge, to calm down but he was arrested when he refused to do so.

He made claims that a taxi driver had tried to kidnap him and that his feet were hurting because had walked a long way.

Magistrates told Lodge they saw the case as serious as the ambulance staff who were trying to treat him could have been helping others elsewhere.

They fined him £65 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and £20 victim surcharge.
