A COUNCILLOR has thanked firefighters after they prevented a blaze from spreading at his home.

Red Watch at Huddersfield Fire Station were called when a stray firework landed on the roof of two Almondbury houses – setting fire to both of them.

Clr Phil Scott, who lives in one of the houses with his wife and two daughters, visited the team at the town’s fire station to thank them for their efforts.

He toured the station, saw their training and youth work and left some chocolate treats as a thank-you.

Clr Scott said: “I cannot thank them enough.

“It’s been more than four weeks now since they saved my home from what could have been a major fire.

“It was a freak accident, a stray firework landed on the roof of my house and my neighbour’s house.

“There was a lot of water damage from the fire operation, but at least the house was saved.”

He said that his daughter is only just able to return to her bedroom, which had to be completely re-decorated after the blaze.

Clr Scott, his family and their neighbour, a young mother and her child, were woken after another neighbour spotted the blaze at their Highlands Avenue homes at 12.20am on November 6.

She alerted the sleeping families and called the fire service.
