Theme park crash victim Joe Pugh has left hospital.

Three weeks after the horrific crash on The Smiler ride at Alton Towers, the Huddersfield student is back at his South Yorkshire home.

But he faces months of physiotherapy with two shattered knees and other injuries.

It has also been revealed that another victim of the Alton Towers rollercoaster crash has had her right leg amputated below the knee, her lawyer said.

Vicky Balch, 20, from Lancashire, was one of five people seriously injured when the Smiler ride collided with an empty carriage on June 2.

Her lawyer Paul Paxton said Miss Balch’s bravery in fighting to keep her leg “has not been rewarded” and her leg was amputated last week.

Fellow victim Leah Washington, 17, who is Mr Pugh’s girlfriend, had her leg amputated above the knee. She remains in hospital in Stoke.

She and her boyfriend were trapped for hours on the mangled wreckage of the thrill ride.

Mr Pugh, who is studying textile design at the University of Huddersfield, is now back home in Barnsley.

Both his knees were smashed in the June 2 crash and he faces months of physiotherapy. Yet speaking shortly after he had returned home, the textiles design student was remarkably upbeat.

He said: ‘It’s amazing, but the accident really has brought the two of us even closer together.

‘We had mutual friends before, but in hospital her friends were coming to see me and mine would go and see her. It’s become an ever-wider and closer circle of friends.’

The young couple, who began dating in April, have been texting each other every day.

Miss Balch and her family thanked medical staff for their care and support.

Miss Balch has previously said that she “just wanted to die” as she waited hours to be rescued from the ride.
