A young man hurt in a car crash five days ago has died.

And there were many tributes paid to Andy Bessell, 28, who was renowned in Huddersfield sporting circles.

Mr Bessell had played rugby league for Lindley Swifts for some years before taking up football and playing for Upperthong, in the Huddersfield District League.

Tragically, he was on his way to watch an Upperthong game last Saturday afternoon when he crashed in Honley.

He was seriously injured when his car crashed in Station Road, close to the entrance to Honley High Schol.

Police closed the road and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance landed to fly Mr Bessell to the intensive care unit at the Leeds General Infirmary.

The road remained closed for several hours after the crash as it was investigated by police.

Police confirmed he died this morning.

Mr Bessell was a former popular player with Lindley Swifts ARLFC

Sam McCluskey from the Lindley club said: “He played for the club a few years back.

“It’s such a shock.

“He was a sound guy. Really great young lad, easy to talk to and to have a laugh with.”

A team-mate at Upperthong James Battye said: “It is tragic news.

“Andy gave up playing rugby a couple of years ago and decided to try his hand at football.

“He was very popular at Upperthong and played as full-back for the second team.

“The second team folded a few weeks ago and he was on his way to watch the first team game last Saturday when the accident happened. Everyone is shocked”.

There were also tributes on social media.
