STREET Angels are now in action in Huddersfield.

The new scheme involves Christian volunteers providing help to vulnerable people in the town centre at night.

About 40 Street Angels have been trained to work with voluntary medical teams and the police and have now started work.

Spokeswoman Gill Atkinson-Heck said: “Our initial experiences have been very good.

“People seem genuinely pleased to see us around and we’ve been able to offer help to people who’ve got into vulnerable situations.”

Chief Insp Jon Carter, the police’s community safety co-ordinator for Kirklees, has welcomed the Street Angels.

He said: “This is a continuation of partnership work aimed at reducing violent incidents in our town centres, most of which are minor scuffles or public order offences.

“The Street Angels provide a reassuring presence for the public.”

Simon Massey, manager of Kirklees Safer Communities Partnership, said: “The Street Angels will help keep vulnerable revellers safe by casting a protective eye over them and supporting them when they become disorientated or separated from their friends.

“He added: The scheme will make our town centre, with its vibrant and dynamic night life, a safer place for all and will help reduce alcohol-related crime and disorder.”
