Travellers are back on a Huddersfield playing field.

The caravans and lorries turned up at Reinwood recreation ground yesterday afternoon – less than two weeks after Kirklees Council served an eviction notice on another group which had occupied the field.

And the news came as a blow to local residents in the Lindley area, who had seen travellers camped on the Heatherleigh playing fields in Lindley Moor Road for a week until Sunday.

Clr Cahal Burke, who has fielded many complaints about the travellers in recent weeks, said: “It is getting ridiculous.

“The people on Reinwood have got on to the site before we can secure it with new barriers and locks; they are one step ahead of us.

“It is costing time and money to go through the process of court action, eviction and a clean-up.”

Police officers were called to the site yesterday afternoon and spoke to the travellers.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “We will take the necessary legal steps through the County Court to regain possession of the land.”

Legislation means that an eviction order applies to specific vehicles so a different group of travellers will require a new court order.
