A NEW animal protection bill has been welcomed by Wakefield MP David Hinchliffe.
He said it had the potential to make life better for those animals that are neglected or abused by their owners.
The bill proposes doubling the present maximum jail sentence for cruelty and increasing the maximum fine of £5,000 to £20,000.
It will also contain a new offence of making or distributing recordings or animal fights and will strengthen existing offences prohibiting betting on and advertising animal fighting.
Mr Hinchliffe, whose Wakefield constituency includes Denby Dale and Kirkburton, said the bill would
provide new powers to the courts, police and government law enforcement agencies to deal effectively with people who ill-treat or neglect animals in their care.
