A Newsome woman has appeared in court after claiming more than £6,000 in benefits she was not entitled to.

Ann Cartwright, of Croftlands, admitted dishonestly making a false statement to obtain a benefit.

The 52-year-old also pleaded guilty to dishonestly failing to disclose information to make a gain.

Robert Campbell, prosecuting, said for two years Cartwright claimed employment support allowance.

In 2009 she also made a claim for Jobseeker’s Allowance.

Mr Campbell said: “At no point did she disclose to the department she was receiving a pension from her former work.

“That would have affected her benefit and £6,498 was overpaid over the period of these claims.”

Magistrates heard that as her pension was only a small amount, Cartwright felt that there was no point disclosing it when she made her claim for benefits.

They were told that Cartwright is now paying the money back.

Magistrates ordered her to comply with a 16-week curfew as punishment.

Cartwright must also pay £85 costs and £60 victim surcharge.
