Police were called after a drunk man was almost hit by a motorist.

Anthony Johnson, of Holme Park Court in Berry Brow, appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

He admitted charges of being drunk and disorderly in public and possession of a controlled drug.

The Huddersfield court heard that police were called to Woodhead Road in Newsome in the early hours of September 18.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said: “Police were flagged down by a member of the public saying they had nearly hit Mr Johnson.

“He was staggering around in the middle of the road.

“They located him and their initial view was to take him home.”

The officers left the 32-year-old at a block of flats.

But they were soon called to return as he had gone to the wrong flat and was banging on random doors.

As he was still the worse for wear he was arrested.

Police found a small bag of cannabis on him when he was taken to the custody area of Castlegate Police Station.

Johnson, who was not represented, said he wanted to stop drinking.

Magistrates fined him £65 and ordered him to pay £20 victim surcharge.
