Anti-terrorism police have arrested five more men in connection with a nationwide fraud inquiry.

Police are investigating an alleged fraud involving bogus charities collecting money for the relief effort in Syria.

Eight men, including two from Huddersfield and Dewsbury, were arrested in March.

On Wednesday officers swooped on addresses in Dewsbury, Halifax and Sheffield and detained five men on suspicion of fraud by false representation.

They were two men aged 33 and 43 from Dewsbury; a 32-year-old and a 53-year-old from Halifax; and a man aged 38 from Sheffield.

A spokesman for the North East Counter Terrorism Unit said six properties and a business unit were being searched.

The five men arrested have been taken to police stations across West and South Yorkshire.

Kent Police launched the investigation after seizing £40,000-worth of pounds, euros and dollars at the Port of Dover in December.

Police said the money had come from four UK-based charities and could be used to fund terrorist or criminal activities.
