A man has died after a river tragedy.

Now police are trying to determine exactly how the tragedy unfolded.

The victim, thought to be in his mid-50s and from Thornhill Lees, died after being found in the River Calder in Dewsbury on Friday night.

He was rescued but died a short time later in hospital.

Police want to know where and how he came to be in the river.

Det Insp Stef Wiseman, of Kirklees District CID, is in charge of the investigation into the death and said: “We were called at 7.36pm on Friday to a report of a man in the river near the Savile Road Bridge, Dewsbury.

“Police, fire and ambulance crews were all dispatched to the scene and shortly before 8pm, the man was pulled from the water at Sands Lane.

“He was taken by ambulance to Dewsbury District Hospital where he later died.

“We have established the identity of the man who is from the Dewsbury area but we do not know how he came to be in the river.

“We have examined CCTV footage from cameras through Dewsbury and have seen the man near the railway station and the bus station, as well as close to the B&Q store which is near Savile Road.

“We would like to hear from anyone who saw the man prior to the incident, especially from anyone in the Savile Road area.

“He was a white man in his 50s with greying hair, who was wearing a grey jacket over a blue shirt”.
