A SHOPPING arcade that was ravaged by fire could have a brand new look by next spring.

The lower floor of Cleckheaton Arcade, near Savoy Square, was gutted by fire in January 2002.

Since then, traders have run their businesses from temporary sites on the top floor of the centre.

But now the whole arcade is set to rise from the ashes into a new and improved complex.

Kirklees Council plan to start renovating the arcade in June, meaning it could be finished by Easter 2005.

The outside of the shopping arcade will change from a blank wall to an attractive facade, reflecting the architecture of the nearby town hall and Victorian buildings.

Inside the centre, new market units will be set up and the whole interior will be refurbished.

An exit directly on to the newly-landscaped Savoy Square could also be added.

Bill Wigham, Kirklees Council markets manager, said: " There still needs to be further discussion on the int- ernal layout. It will be more modern."
