Armed police were called into Huddersfield after a hit and run incident.

The firearms officers were sent to Crosland Moor after reports that a man had been seen with a gun in the aftermath of the incident.

He was thought to be one of a large group of men who gathered immediately after one man was struck by a car.

Detectives were today hunting both the injured man and the driver.

The incident happened in Nabcroft Lane, close to the junction with Everard Street, about 8pm on Thursday.

Officers were called to the scene following reports of a vehicle that failed to stop after it was allegedly in a collision with a pedestrian.

A number of people were then seen around the scene of the collision.

The group, the pedestrian and the driver of the vehicle had left the scene before officers arrived.

It is believed one the men in the group was seen holding what may be a revolver and a large number officers were called in.

No weapons have been found.

Several police vehicles surrounded the area and the West Yorkshire Police helicopter was called in, hovering over the street for several minutes.

Det Insp Ian Thornes of Kirklees CID said: “I am appealing for the pedestrian who was hit by the car to come forward, as they are likely to have been injured and may require medical treatment.

“He was classed as walking wounded. as he was seen hobbling away from the incident. We are carrying out checks at the hospital and with health centres.

“There were reports of a large group coming out into the street and we are also looking to trace those people.

“One car has been seized by police but it may be other vehicles were involved.

““Enquiries are ongoing in to the wider circumstances of the incident.”

Police said one man had been arrested and is being held for questioning.
