Thrillseekers were left running in terror at the Cambridge Road Mega Value Funfair after fears a man had a gun.

The family event escalated into a day from hell on Sunday afternoon after a scuffle led to mass panic.

Police were called to the fair after members of the public reported that a man had a gun, a claim he allegedly made to security after being thrown out after a fight.

The fair’s organiser Alan Cowie said a man drove at staff after being ejected.

A 20-year-old man was later arrested and bailed.

Lindsay Maguire, 33, from Golcar , was at the fair with her daughter when trouble kicked off.

“The first I heard was that there had been a scuffle and someone had been thrown out for punching someone”, she said.

“We saw families running for their lives shouting ‘he’s got a gun’.

“We ran to the furthest point and hid.

“There was only one entrance and exit and everyone was trying to get out, someone had to kick down a gate to let people out.

“We were all petrified. We thought it could be a terrorist attack.”

Witnesses claimed a man had threatened he had the weapon after being kicked out of the fair.

Organiser Alan Cowie said: “A man was ejected, he then got in his car and drove at security.

“He actually hit one of our staff, who luckily was not badly injured.

“Police were called straight away by myself, while members of the public called to say they had seen a gun.

“Armed officers turned up as well, but found no signs of a gun.”

Alan added: “Customers were understandably upset. Our security did everything they could to keep disruption to a minimum.

“They had no idea what would happen.”

Alan confirmed that four security staff were present at the site.

A statement from police said: “Officers were called to reports of a large on going disturbance at an address on Cambridge Road, Huddersfield at 2.35pm on Sunday 21 August.

“They spoke to various people at the site and took a further report that a handgun had been discharged.

“Armed officers then attended to carry out enquiries.

“After carrying out further enquiries officers were satisfied that no gun had been discharged.

“A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and assault and released on bail.”
