Male and female shopkeepers were threatened with a knife in a terrifying shop robbery in Newsome.

And the robbery came just hours after two further cash raids on a Post Office in Grange Moor and a bookies in Scisset.

The third incident happened at 8.20pm at Simply Food and Drink, in Church Lane, Newsome.

The workers were behind the counter when a masked male entered and threatened them with what police said was a bound wood-handled knife with a seven-inch blade.

The suspect shouted, demanding cash, and one of them handed over £150 from the till.

Both the shopkeepers were shaken but uninjured as the thug went off in a car, driven by a second person.

Police mounted a search of the area and the West Yorkshire Police helicopter flew in to join the hunt.

Both suspect attempted to evade police after fleeing the car and running off on foot but police located the suspects who were subsequently arrested and remain in custody.

During the earlier robberies around 4pm at Grange Moor Post Office on Bedford Avenue and a betting shop in Scissett, staff were also threatened with a knife.

Detectives confirmed enquiries are ongoing to all three incidents and two men are in custody in connection with the Newsome raid.
