A former Elland pupil is flying the flag at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Kate Broster from Blackley is one of the flag-raisers at some of the 150 medal presentation ceremonies.

The 21-year-old combat medical technician is a private in the Royal Army Medical Corps and said she was delighted to be picked to take part in this once-in-a-lifetime event in Scotland.

She said: “I was selected to take part in the London 2012 Olympics but I was working on venue security then. I got a really good report from that and, as a result, I was selected for the Commonwealth Games.

“It’s very different being in the ceremonial team. There is a lot of rehearsal and practice time, with long days stood in the sun. I enjoyed meeting the public at the Olympics, and I don’t have so much contact with them here.

“But I do get stopped by people asking to have their photos taken with me because I’m dressed in my Number Two uniform, rather than combat clothing. Everyone seems really friendly.”

The former Brooksbank School, Elland, pupil joined the Army in 2009 and has since served in Afghanistan, Jordan and Kenya.

She is currently serving with 33 Field Hospital at Fort Blockhouse in Gosport, Hampshire.

She lives in Wiltshire with her fiancé, Lance Corporal Tyler Walsh, who serves in 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. A keen sportswoman herself, Kate lists athletics and horse riding among her interests.

Kate is one of 2,500 service personnel assisting Police Scotland to make the 20th Commonwealth Games safe, secure and smooth-running. Members of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force personnel are also serving.
