A YORKSHIRE bus company is celebrating after receiving praise for driving down its carbon emissions.

Arriva’s bus division – which runs services in Huddersfield – has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for addressing climate change by reducing its emissions by 4% over the past three years.

The recognition comes after the company invested in modernising its vehicle fleet, bio-fuels and a special driver-aid system called EcoManager, which alerts drivers to levels of fuel consumption.

Chloe Leach O’Connell, marketing manager for Arriva Yorkshire, said: “The time and money we’ve dedicated to reducing our carbon emissions means our buses are more fuel efficient than required. We’re delighted that our achievement has been recognised by such a prestigious body as the Carbon Trust Standard.

“People recognise that using public transport is more eco-friendly than driving a car, but it can help save cash too.

“We’ve developed an online fuel calculator which works out exactly how much can be saved and should encourage more people to catch the bus.

“Initiatives like this demonstrate our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, rather than simply paying others to off-set our emissions.”

Harry Morrison, general manager for the Carbon Trust Standard, said: “We congratulate Arriva UK Bus on their certification.

“Carbon is a complex issue so most people need shorthand to indicate whether a company is doing the right thing.

“Achieving the Carbon Trust Standard allows Arriva UK Bus to talk with integrity about the serious and credible steps it has taken to reduce its carbon emissions.”

The Carbon Trust Standard recognises organisations for real carbon reduction.

Based on a rigorous, independent assessment, it certifies that organisations have measured, managed and reduced their carbon emissions across their own operations, and are committed to reducing them year on year.
