CHILDREN are thought to have started a fire in a landmark Huddersfield building.

The intruders had got into the clock tower at Newsome Mills on Ruth Street in Newsome and set fire to rubbish in the tower at 7.50pm last night.

Firefighters were alerted after people spotted a glow behind the tower’s shuttered doors and smoke began to seep out.

Two fire engines arrived from Huddersfield fire station and immediately called for back-up from the station’s aerial appliance.

Crew Manager Dave Chadwick said: “We found two seats of fire just behind the clock face. The fire had spread from the rubbish and damaged the tower’s wooden floor.’’

Crews were there for about an hour. Part of the Newsome Mills site is currently being redeveloped.
