ELDERLY residents were lucky to escape unharmed after a suspected arson attack on a block of flats.

Firefighters from Batley and Cleckheaton were called to Carr Street in Birstall after the fire started in the porch of the building at about 10.30pm yesterday.

Some of the five residents were asleep at the time. A passerby raised the alarm.

Batley fire station watch commander Robin Ferguson said: "There was no imminent danger, but if it had been left to spread it could have been serious."
